Now Taking Registration For Fall Math Classes

AskDrCallahan will be offering Algebra 1, Algebra II With Trig, and Geometry as cooperative and online classes this Fall to all home schooling students.

Mrs. Cassidy Cash will be teaching Algebra 1, Algebra II With Trig, and Geometry this Fall. Famous for introducing random facts, teaching with hands-on activities, and getting students out of the classroom and into the real world when teaching math. Armed with 5+ years of education experience teaching in the homeschool and private school arenas, plus 8+ years experience as a math tutor to all ages, Cassidy goes out of her way to make learning math–even college level math–a great experience. Using the AskDrCallahan college level textbooks and dvd material is just the beginning with this course. Cassidy integrates homework and example problems with subjects students already enjoy by starting the class with a survey of what they like, then she spends the rest of the year trying to use those subjects as jumping off points for teaching the math concepts. From horses and NASA to movie production, art, and music, this class teaches math like you’ve never seen before. Your students will get a great college level education and have fun doing it.

Algebra: Optional Lessons?

Chapter 16 and 17 in the AskDrCallahan homeschool Algebra course are considered optional. We consider these algebra lessons optional because chapter 16 covers inequalities which is material you will see again in later courses (see in the immediately following course if you’re using our typical math sequence) and then Chapter 17 covers number sequences, which is material you will never see again unless you choose an extremely technical (and rare) study option. Even if you are this rare student, you reach this technical level at college, and they teach you this concept from the ground up. Both chapters contain good math material, so feel free to use them, but you do not have to cover them at the Algebra 1 level.

Also, you should note that you are still getting an excellent Algebra course without those chapters, and you are not hurting yourself if you choose to use them. They are not more advanced than an Algebra 1 student can handle, they are —just as they are labeled—optional. Good if you want to use them, but you don’t have to.

Online Classes and Tutoring This Fall

THIS FALL (August 2010) Tim and Cassidy Cash (“the homework help people” for most of you) will open the first AskDrCallahan Homeschool Class and Tutoring Center. We are so excited to finally be able to offer these great AskDrCallahan college prep courses to students “on the ground” and in-person. The classes will be held in Alabaster, AL, but students may also take any of the classes offered as online courses too. This gives you direct access not only to a live teacher for your class experience, but you’re getting hands on help and attention from the people who created these courses. PLUS! the Homework Help staffers that help students over email, will be on hand to offer in-person tutoring services to anyone who might want to take advantage of that. Right now the specific location is TBA, but subject, times, teacher information, as well as information on the online classes are listed below. How to check if your math course is covering the key concepts

When deciding on a math course, you want to be sure that all of the key concepts are being covered and that your students are getting the best education they can receive to prepare them for the future.

But how do you tell the difference between eighteen math courses all labeled “Algebra”. Are they all the same course? The answer is that some courses are the same, but many are not.

To evaluate a course’s key concepts, check the Table of Contents. The Table of Contents is the best place to start because it gives you a good overview of what is being covered in that course.  This is the place where you can decide quickly and definitively if a math course is covering all of the concepts a good math course needs. If you scan the table of contents and a key concept is missing, you know immediately that you don’t need that course.

(For more information on identifying the key concepts per course, click here)

Delay on Disks

We are back ordered on a few of the Algebra disks so if your course kit arrives with some of the disks “missing” or if you get a ways through your course and think you’ve lost a few, let us know!

(Email support@askdrcallahan.com)

But more than likely we are aware of your dilemma and have them in mail to you already!

We are shipping out the backordered disks by Monday (April 19, 2010), and they are all later disks, not the first one you will need, so you should be fine as far as keeping pace with the course, etc.

Feel free to contact us if you have questions! We are here to help :)

Do I have to buy the whole course kit?

You have plenty of options when it comes to taking our courses. You can buy only the dvds and then borrow the book/solutions manual from a friend.

You can buy the textbook (probably cheaper than from us) on amazon or somewhere similar and borrow the dvds.

You can even buy only the textbook and download our syllabus for free on our product pages.

If you let us know which courses you are wanting to take, we can give you the ISBN numbers for the textbooks and solutions manuals you will need and you can search for them easier on amazon or wherever. Also, you can email us and we can sell you just the textbook and solutions manual. Most of those prices are outlined on our product pages.

Homework Help will support any of these customer options for free. What we do not support for free is if you are using an alternate curriculum. We will support other courses, but we charge for that service. Read more here.

What are the options besides the whole course kit?

If you are one of those parents that wants to take a college prep course, but maybe you already have parts of the course at home, or maybe you are partnering with a friend. Whatever you reasons, you aren’t sure you want the entire course kit. We understand that, and here we have provided some options for taking AskDrCallahan math courses without buying the whole course kit.

1) Buy only the textbook and download our syllabus for free on our website. http://www.askdrcallahan.com/Products/AlgebraIIwTrig.html (scroll down and click on “teachers guide download” the syllabus is in there—we have this available for all our products) You can follow the syllabus without the dvds and we will support you for free (because you would then be “our customer” and we support all our customers for free) Your course experience will not be as good this way, because the DVDs really do enhance your education and they give students great examples, etc.  Our Homework Help staff will answer your students questions and help them through the process step by step, as many times as they need. We always respond within 24 hours, too, so you won’t get behind waiting on an answer from us. If you take this route, it is going to be essential that you get the solutions manual that goes with the textbook but those can be found for cheap online as well.  (read more about that here) If you have a friend that is taking our course, you might be able to join up with them and borrow the dvds.

2 ) Consider taking cooperative (“co-op” or “coop”) classes. A lot of places have coop classes where students can take subjects from a teacher. I teach in this environment, and if you let the teacher know you can’t afford to buy the textbooks they might let you borrow theirs (I’ve done this for some of my students).  You might also search amazon for their “used” textbooks and you can usually find them there for a couple bucks each. (you can buy the textbooks we use in our courses this way as well), The coop I work for charges $25/month per student per class. That is cheap. Most coops will charge 30 to even 50, but it really depends on the coop, the location, and the amount of time the teachers are having to give to the coop. So search around. You might find a good one in your area. (If you’re in Alabama, let me know and I can get you connected with mine). A good website to check out for finding out where coops are located is here: http://www.home-school.com/groups/ That is the group page for Home School World—they have a homepage you may want to check out but from here you can click on your state (or country if you’re not US), and find a cooperative listed in that area. I would encourage you to call and talk with real people, if possible, because some of the smaller coops (where classes are cheaper) may not be listed online, so talking with people connected to the homeschool groups in your area is a great way to find out about the non-listed ones.

Ask your local coop about teaching the AskDrCallahan courses. We offer discounted rates to classes of students using our materials.

3) Take Any Course You Want and Use Homework Help. Obviously, since our courses are very focused on answering the “Why” for students we would recommend our courses, but if you are not in a position to buy those courses, you might also consider our Homework Help service. We will support any curriculum you choose —meaning your students can email us all their “Why” questions and “how to” questions, and any other questions they need answered—for  $98/year (around $8/month). In that way your students could use a different curriculum and sort of supplement in the “why” questions. Though if your students already have a tutor, you may already be getting answers to the “why” and plenty of homework help! :) You can look into Homework Help here: http://www.askdrcallahan.com/HWHelp
