Let’s face it — word problems are where most math meltdowns happen.
Your teen may do fine with numbers, but when a problem starts with
“A boat leaves the dock…”
they panic.
We get it. That’s why today we’re breaking down a simple approach for teaching word problems — especially in Algebra, when students start solving systems of equations.
😫 Why Word Problems Feel So Hard
Most kids don’t struggle with the math — they struggle with the translation.
Here’s what’s happening:
- They read too fast
- They skip over key info
- They don’t know how to turn sentences into equations
The secret is to slow down and follow a clear 3-step process.
🧠 A Simple 3-Step Method for Word Problems
Let’s take this example:
Cindy bought 2 adult tickets and 3 student tickets for $42. Her friend, Greg, bought 3 adult tickets and 2 student tickets for $48. How much do the tickets cost?
.
Step 1: Define Variables
Let A = adult ticket,
Let S = student ticket
Step 2: Write Equations
- 2A + 3S = 42 -> Cost of 2 adult tickets plus cost of 3 student tickets equal $42
- 3A + 2S = 48 -> Cost of 3 adult tickets plus cost of 2 student tickets equal $48
Step 3: Solve Using Elimination or Substitution
You now have a system of equations! From here, it’s just solving by elimination or substitution.
