What Is Pre-Algebra?
So let’s clear up the mystery.
Pre-algebra is exactly what it sounds like—it’s the bridge between arithmetic (basic math) and formal algebra. It introduces your student to new ways of thinking: using variables, solving for unknowns, working with negative numbers, and starting to see how math becomes more about patterns and logic instead of just “doing math”.
But pre-algebra isn’t one specific course with a universal start date. It’s more like a phase of learning.
🚀 In our program, it’s actually the first part of Elementary Algebra course.
When Should You Start Pre-Algebra?
Most students are ready sometime around 7th to 9th grade. But readiness isn’t just about age—it’s about whether they’ve mastered basic math operations, are comfortable with fractions and decimals, and are ready to think a little more abstractly.
✅ Here’s a quick test:
If your student can confidently handle multiplication and long division, operations with fractions, and basic order of operations, they’re likely ready to start pre-algebra. Still unsure? See our Algebra Readiness test link below.
Go Slow and Without Stress
A lot of parents get really stressed about the right time to start – hoping to get it ‘exactly right.’
But math doesn’t have to be rushed, and honestly, pushing algebra too early can backfire. Our goal is to build confidence and logical thinking, not just get through a textbook.
And if your student is looking toward careers in STEM, this is even a stronger reason to slow down. It is better they have a solid foundation in algebra than move quickly and not understand.
And by the way—pre-algebra is a perfect time to slow down and build strong foundations. Even if your student is a bit older, that’s okay. We’ve seen students thrive when they go back and fill in gaps instead of charging ahead unprepared.
How Our Algebra Works for Pre-Algebra
For parents wanting a pre-algebra, we actually recommend using our AskDrCallahan Algebra course, and splitting it into two years—pre-algebra the first year, and algebra the second year. That’s how we taught our own kids, and many of our customers have too.
💡 It works.
